Disturbing Video: Violence against women in Sudan

9 Dec

It is unclear what this woman did to be sentenced to lashing, but regardless of her crime, I do not see how the humiliation and pain she faced could ever be justified. I am finding it extremely difficult to write anything about this video, so I’ll just let you watch it and make up your own minds.

    Absolutely unacceptable.

The Public Security Law needs to be reformed.

It’s not just about the law though – the policemen are all loving it – it’s a cultural problem.

And the law is not uniformly applied – they only target the poor and meek and those without connections.

I’m sure some of those in power will be ‘highly embarassed’ by this.

I’ll tell you what. It looks bad, but I’d rather take that, then years of prison. It’ll be a few weeks maybe months before I’d get over that, but 1. It’s one hell of a deterrent and 2. I wouldn’t have to mentally recuperate from years of imprisonment and years of lost time. It also saves the state (and taxpayers) all sorts of money. I just hope she had a proper trial before this and that she was proven guilty beyond anyone’s (even her own) doubt.
That’s my take. In the end even murder’s cry and scream before they go to prison or are executed.

Oh and yes the laws should be applied to everyone. I dont’ know if the laws are only applied to the poor and meek in the Sudan. But the purpose of justice is that they are applied to everyone, the rich and the poor. The well connected and the not well connected. Unfortunately we don’t know who this woman is. So don’t base your judgements on appearences and assumptions alone.

  5. Jamila El-Gizuli December 11, 2010 at 1:16 am #

I completely disagree with you Anwar on your stand.
Ask yourself one question. Would the Prophet (PBUH) have approved of this?
A woman is flogged and bunch of men are having a feast at it with their giggles and videotaping?
That, plus a truck load of arguments against this treatment. We all know how selective this punishment has been applied. The language used. Didn’t you hear how the policeman was addressing the woman? Where is her humanity?
Neither religion, nor our Sudanese traditions would ever approve of this video as is witnessed by the majority of commentators on whichever version of the video. This is NOT what we Sudanese stand for nor what we practice.

ANWAR U IGNORANT FOOL!! UR NOT LIVING IN FANTASYLAND! THIS IS SUDAN!! WOMEN WHO ARE SERVING TEA ON THE STREET DUE TO THE POOR ECONOMY ARE HAVING HOT BOILING WATER SPILLED ON THEIR FACES AND BODIES, A WOMAN DIED AND HAD A MISCARRIAGE RUNNING FROM THESE THUG POLICE! HARAM ALEIK! ENTA MA RAJIL? WALAHI ALL THE GOOD MEN ARE DEAD!! WE HAVE PUNKS NOWADAYS DEFENDING MONSTERS! THIS WOMAN KILLED NOBODY, SHE WAS JUST A TARGET! THOSE WHO DENY FREEDOM TO OTHERS DESERVE IT NOT FOR THEMSELVES! GO READ THE BOOK LORD OF THE FLIES, SOME PEOPLE WHEN GIVEN POWER WILL DO SICK THINGS! BUT ALLAH(SWT) HATES TYRANTS AND OPPRESSORS AND THEY WILL BE MEETING WITH ALLAH SOON!
    Al-‘Adl

His is the absolute justice. Justice is the opposite of tyranny. Tyranny causes pain, destruction, and disturbance. Justice secures peace, balance, order and harmony. Allah the Just is the enemy of tyrants; He hates those who support tyrants and their friends, sympathizers and acquaintances. In Islam, tyranny in any form or shape is unlawful. To be just is an honor and distinction befitting a Muslim.
PROPHET MUHAMMED(SALALAHUALYHEWASSALUM) SAYS….”THE BEST OF YOU MEN ARE THE BEST TO YOUR WIFE”
he stressed the kind treatment towards women, calling them glass vessels
and u tell me its ok to beat a woman? YOU ANWAR, ARE A PIG! AND I SPIT AT YOU AND ANYTHING LIKE U.

  7. sana December 11, 2010 at 1:40 am #

THE PROPHET MUHAMMED(SALALAHUALYHEWASSALUM) NEVER HIT A WOMAN IN HIS LIFE AND NEVER CALLED A WOMAN A BAD NAME…AND TODAY IN THE YEAR 2010 WE HAVE THESE PIGS WHO CLAIM TO BE MUSLIM, PICKING UP GIRLS AND WOMEN TO LASH THEM! I KNOW OF STORIES OF GIRLS IN THE POLICE STATION WHO HAVE BEEN SEXUALLY ASSAULTED!! HUNDREDS OF GIRLS HAVE BEEN LASHED BUT THIS IS THE FIRST VIDEO THAT WENT ON YOUTUBE! THANK GOD FOR YOUTUBE AND THE MEDIA, HAD I BEEN THERE I WOULD OF SLASHED THE THROATS OF THOSE PIGS WHO THINK ITS FUNNY TO MAKE FUN OF A WOMAN’S CRY FOR MERCY! ALLAH SAYS THOSE WHO DONT GIVE MERCY, WILL RECEIVE NO MERCY FROM HIM!WHILE WOMEN IN SUDAN ARE BEING TERRORIZED BY THESE PIGS, U MAKE EXCUSES FOR THESE PIGS YA ANWAR? BECAUSE YOURE NOT MAN ENOUGH TO ADMIT WHO REALLY IS RESPONSIBLE,SO ITS EASIER FOR YOU TO SIDE WITH THE TYRANT BECAUSE YOURE A COWARD!! GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN MEN WERE MEN, NOW WE HAVE COWARDS WHO WILL SIT IN SILENT AND WATCH THEIR OWN MOTHERS AND WIVES BEING BEATEN! BUT ALLAH’S PUNISHMENT IS THE MOST SEVERE, TYRANTS AND THOSE WHO SUPPORT TYRANTS WILL SUFFER IN THE GRAVE AND YOUM AL QIYAMMAH!! FEAR ALLAH IN THE TREATMENT OF WOMEN. THE PROPHET MUHAMMED(SALALAHUALYHEWASSALUM) SAID THAT IF A MAN RAISES HIS HAND TO BEAT A WOMAN, IT IS AS IF HE RAISED HIS HANDS TO THE NAR(HELLFIRE)

  8. sana December 11, 2010 at 1:43 am #

ITS EASY FOR SUDANESE MEN TO CLAIM INJUSTICE IN ISRAEL, BUT THEY SIT IN SILENCE WHEN IT IS INJUSTICE AGAINST SUDANESE WOMEN!!!

  9. sana December 11, 2010 at 2:28 am #

“O’ ye men. Fear Allah and treat your women with kindness.” Prophet Muhammad(salalahualyhewassalum)

Also, in the farewell pilgrimage of Prophet Muhammad(saas), during his farewell speech, he implored men to be good and kind to their women and to deal with them justly. Where else would one find a religious book which dedicates an entire Surah (chapter) to the subject of Al-Nisa (women) in the most respectful terms other than Islam? The answer is nowhere.

  10. Anwar December 11, 2010 at 4:40 am #

Okay Sana where do i start. You and Jamila obviously did not understand what I was saying , or you didn’t read through it completley. I do not justify the taunts of the punishers. That is wrong. As I said I hope she got a fair trial for her crime and that this was not given arbitrarily. I am not commenting on the plight of all women in the Sudan. And I am not saying that women should be abused. I think you gals are reacting just from her screams and not understanding that if there was a crime which would justify years or even months of jail time this is the better choice. We do not know the context so we should not make assumptions that this is just abuse of power. Please do not say haram alayya. The Quran says that women and men guilty of adultery or fornication, having had four witnesses testify are to be flogged 100 times. So you guys claim that flogging is not justice or Islam when it clearly is. Again I do not justify the taunting and I do not believe that innocent women anywhere should be abused. But if there was a crime, and a just trial, then there must be a punishment. Again if we are talking years or months of prison, I think this is the better option. I would say the same thing had it been a man. Had it been a man and he were crying for mercy (despite his guilt, remember that), those guys would have been much more taunting. But again, the taunting is NEVER justified. And if this woman was accused wrongfully than this is to be condemned and she should be compensated.

  11. samara December 12, 2010 at 9:13 am #

In response to Sana i back u up all the way sister, and in response to Anwar what you are saying still does not justify the way this women was lashed.

In islam like you said lashing is part of a punishment in case of adultery or alcohol, however the case here is if this was a punished due to such an act it still has not been carried out in the correct way of our teachings in islam. Adding to that, the fact that this women was humiliated and the way these officers have taken the matter as joke and taking turns.

Above all the fact is we are not practising shari’ah law in sudan in the correct way!! Nor is there any country in the entire world practicing it from top to bottom. Here we wish to practice it but what about the other corrupted things going on in our country! we just put a blind eye to it all!

Finally if this was an act of punishment to adultery then tell me this:
where are those witnesses? *THE FOUR MUST I MENTION*
    where are the judges?
why isn’t the proper lashing punishment *as mentioned in the Quran and religious books* being done in terms of count and on the back instead of head, face, upper body and lower body?

If you ask me and i am sure any one with common sense, this woman was abused and tortured!! just for the sake of these monsters having a laugh of it and taking what ever issues and anger out on this poor soul! and quite frankly i hope these men are brought to justice! stoned or lashed to death.. its inhumane, and unjust and wrong in so many levels.
wo deel min rabana bimsho wean!

they r no different to the Isreali’s who are torturing our brothers and sisters in Palestine.

“Above all the fact is we are not practising shari’ah law in sudan in the correct way!! Nor is there any country in the entire world practicing it from top to bottom.”

It would be better if it were not practised anywhere. The whole concept of deducing a legal system from the writings in a centuries old sacred book is a mistake.

No Justice in Islam for women or others.

  14. anonymous December 13, 2010 at 5:03 am #

wtf? this video is from last year, why is it just being released?

  15. Mohamed December 13, 2010 at 10:23 am #

I see so many ppl saying that the lashings should only be on the back. Please refer back to the hadith and not our culture. Lashes are to be given on the back , torso, legs, and arms. Provided they are not hitten on the face or a place that might cause sever harm (Maqtal). Punishments are not meant to be easy, they are a deterrent. As far as the video, did they do too much? Well, a little bit yeah. Why do i say that? Because the person with the whip is not supposed to move his shoulder joint, only his elbow. And the leather whip should’ve been sub’d with wood or something that would not cause cuts.
Detach yourself from the situation emotionally, which is hard to do, then STUDY every angle. Allah knows best.

  16. JAMAL December 13, 2010 at 2:32 pm #

REALLY IT IS EXTREMELY HUMIIATION..I THINK THE GUY WITH TIE ON NEG IS NOT A JUDGE.. HE MIGHT BE A DISTRICT PROSECUTOR..AND THIS PLACE IS NOT A COURT..ITIS A POLICE STATION ..SO THIS GIRL IS NOT BEEN SENTENCED IN A COURT OF LAW I GUESS…IT APPEARED THAT THIS GIRL IS ONE OF THE HAUSA TRIBE BECAUSE SHE WAS CRYING IN HAUSA DIALECT BY SAYING ( WAYU MAMA) WHICH MEANS(OH MY MOM)… THE RACES AGAINST THIS TRIBE IS HIGH AMONG THE NORTH SUDANESE TRIBES…

  17. Anwar December 14, 2010 at 6:44 am #

Thank you Mohammad for your objective analysis. From this video we cannot tell if there was a trial. To assume that there wasn’t is the same as if we were to assume that there was. Some believe there wasn’t a trial because they do not trust in the fair enforcement of Sudanese law nor in the enforcers. I can see that side. Some would argue that for something like this to happen there had to be a trial. We will never know if this was a lawful punishment that came after a fair trial. We will never know from this video. If there was a fair trial, this woman was not hit in the face and was hit along the back and the legs. It did not look like they were trying to seriously injur her. Humaliation and pain, however, naturally come with the punishment. NO, the guards and the punishers should not have been taunting her, that is completey unnacceptable. But it seems that many here are judging without knowledge and making a lot of assumptions about this woman’s situation. Whether this was shariah law or not doesn’t concern me that much. What concerns me is whether this woman had a fair trial, that the men should absolutely not be taunting her and they should be whipped a few times themselves for that, but certainly not whipped to death like the sister suggested above. That sort of lack of control over your emotions sister is very dangerous and can seriously blind you from seeing the truth of a situation. To me they were not trying to mortally injur the woman or leave scars. It’s hard to watch a woman scream while a man is whipping her, however, I fully understand this. Had it been a woman whipping I don’t think it would have recieved the same amount of outrage from our Sudanese sisters. So is that the better answer? Women whippers?

I ask THE MOST HIGH who sits on the Throne to please by Christ JESUS forgive me. If that girl was Kin to me, I’D BLEW THEM UNCLE TOM POLICES HEADS CLEAN OFF. THEN I WOULD HAVE STOOD OVER THEM AND SQUEEZED THE REST OF THE CLIP OUT AND RELOADED AND SQUEEZED OUT ANOTHER CLIP AND SPIT ON ‘EM. I’D TOOK HER HAND AND MADE HER SQUEEZE OFF A COUPLE. BLACK PEOPLE, HAVE BEEN OUR BIGGEST ENEMY – MAKING OURSELVES LOOK LIKE DUMB IGNORANT ANIMALS IN OUR OWN MOTHER COUNTRY. BLACK WOMEN HAVE BEEN THE BEST – LOOK IN YOUR BIBLE NUMBERS 12 – MOSES THE MEEKEST MAN ON EARTH AND SPOKE WITH GOD MOUTH TO MOUTH MARRIED AN ETHIOPIAN WOMAN
GOD’S BEST MAN CHOOSE THE BEST WOMAN
